ECSOOT - Regional Summary

In eastern Labrador and northern Quebec, geological features represent a microcosm of Precambrian continental evolution. Portions of three Archean cratons (Superior, Rae and Nain) and five Proterozoic orogenic belts (Eastern Churchill Province including the New Quebec and Torngat orogens, the Labrador orogen and the Makkovik and easternmost Grenville provinces) are being investigated. Together, these embrace a geological history ranging form 3800 to 900 Ma and chronicle the construction of a significant part of eastern North America. Three principal scientific themes form the foundation of transect activities:

  • lithospheric structure of the Nain Province, a type example of a high-grade Archean craton;

  • the 3-d architecture of the Proterozoic orogens which comprise two broad and different groups, one in which deformation was driven primarily by continental collision and the other in which terrane accretion was the dominant factor;

  • links between Precambrian basement structure and the development of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic margin.
